葫蘆藤和松樹
Are you as strong as you think you are?你是否和自己相像的一樣強壯嗎? (勵害了我的國嗎 ?)[A]THE OLD PINE TREE 古老的松樹
01/Once很久以前
there was有著 a very tall, old pine tree一顆又高又老的松樹.
02/It had been growing它曾經一直成長著
for many years很多年了
in the quiet woods在一片安靜的樹林裡.
03/The tree had grown這顆樹曾經生長著
quite slowly and carefully十分慢地又小心地
through the years歷經數年了.
04/It was nearly它幾乎是 the oldest tree最老的樹
in the forest在森林裡.
05/The tree raised這樹抬舉了 its head它的頭
high above the other trees高高地超越了其他的樹
toward the sky直向天空
like the King of trees就像群樹之王.

it stood high它高高聳立 above the old trees超越其它老樹,
the old pine tree這顆老松樹never bragged從不吹噓.

[B]THE GOURD-VINE 葫蘆藤
01/One spring day某個春日,
a strong breeze一陣強風 brought a little seed帶來了一粒小種子

at the roots of the pine tree在松樹的根處.

It swelled它膨漲了 and puffed out而且鼓起了自体

to the top of the pine tree松樹的頂端."
said the little gourd-vine小葫蘆藤說了.
"I will show我將要秀 everyone每一顆樹
how rapidly如何地快速地 I can grow我可以成長.
I refuse我拒絕 to grow slowly成長慢慢地
like these trees像這些樹."
02/The gours-vine葫蘆藤
tugged拉扯了 and pulled又拉高了 at its roots在它的樹跟
until一直到
they were nearly它們幾乎是被
pulled out of the ground拖拉出地面.
03/It kept它繼續 calling down向下喊叫 to them對著它們:
"Drink more多喝水, drink more多喝水, I say聽我的話!
I must grow我必須成長 faster較快地."
04/It held on tightly to the pine tree
and climbed and climbed.
05/It climbed
until it was way up to the highest branch.
06/"Look at me !"
screamed the little gourd-vine, loudly.
You, the pine tree, had been growing
for a great many years,
and I only began this summer.
See how high I have grown !"
07/Day after day
the little gourd-vine gloated over its growth.
08/"I will soon be the biggest plant
in the forest.
I will grow much taller
than all of you !"
[D]
01/Summer passed and every day
the little gourd-vine bragged
to other trees.
02/But the old pine tree just rustled its branches
and said nothing.
It knew a thing or two.

03/Fall passed,
and even the little gourd-vine slowed
in its growth.
04/Winter came and
a huge storm came.
05/A mighty wind swept through the trees,
bringing snowflakes.
06/The flowers hung their heads.
The birds flew south.
The old pine tree did not mind the cold
in the least.
It had lived through many stormy times
during its life.
07/But the poor little gourd-vine!
It had grown so fast
that it had forgotten to grow carefully and well.
Its stalks were not soft.
08/One cold night
the frost touched it,
and it fell in a heap
on the ground.
Not even the old pine tree could hold it up.
And that was the END of the proud little gourd-vine.
09/ALL THE BRAGGING DID NOT HELP IT SURVIVE
WHEN TIMES BECAME HARD.
(結論):所有的自吹自擂也沒能在嚴峻時刻來臨時,
幫助小葫蘆滕存活下來。
(勵害了我的國嗎?)
